The 27th National Veterans Golden Age Games were recently held on May 30 - June 4, 2013 in Buffalo, NY. This year's theme featured "Warriors on the Waterfront." Veterans aged 55+ traveled from across the country to compete in 19 events which challenged them mentally and physically. Events included air rifles, bowling, checkers, croquet, cycling, and field events such as the javelin, shot put and discus, golf, nine ball, dominoes, horseshoes, shuffleboard, swimming, and table tennis.

Nine Veterans from West Palm Beach VAMC participated in 14 events. These Veterans ranged in age from 56 to 87 years old. This year, six local participants were female! Each participant was required to compete in four events within their age group and in most of the events competed within the same gender. Twenty-two medals were achieved by West Palm Beach area Veterans, with several participants achieving new personal best times or scores. These nine Veterans embraced the main purpose of the National Veterans Golden Age Games: to promote the rehabilitative value of health and wellness. During the past year, these dedicated Veterans have trained on their bicycles, in pools, and joined bowling leagues. They serve as an example of Healthy Living for Veterans and seniors alike.

Maxine Bodman (4 medals), John Howell, Charles Landry (1 Medal), Maxwell Nelson, Marina Perez (3 medals), Stacie Sarno (4 Medals), Holly Starks (2 Medals), Joy Teter (4 medals) and Carolyn (Kim) Virgil (4 Medals) are committed to return and participate in the 2014 National Veterans Golden Age Games, hosted by the Veterans Healthcare System of the Ozarks in Northwest Arkansas. They challenge more Veterans from West Palm Beach area to join them next May, 2014 for a week filled with memories, challenges, and healthy goals for the future.
