The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is committed to providing high-quality health care to Veteran patients nationwide through health care technology innovations. One of these products, the VA Blue Button on My HealtheVet (www.myhealth.va.gov), enables Veteran patients to generate and download an electronic file that contains their available personal health from their VA record and self-entered information from My HealtheVet, VA's online Personal Health Record (PHR) for Veterans. Over the past several months, VA has significantly expanded the types of information available to Veterans who have upgraded to a Premium My HealtheVet account and utilize the VA Blue Button.
In July, 2013, My HealtheVet Keeping the Promise is being spread nationwide through radio promotions as we gear up for the 10 Year Anniversary which is highlighted in the Federal News Radio Announcement My HealtheVet Keeping the Promise. You can also find a feature story online at www.va.gov that shows how Secure Messaging helps Veteran patients connect with their doctors. Veterans Connect with Doctors Online Securely.
In June 2013, VA released additional, exciting VA Blue Button enhancements aimed at providing Veteran patients with more efficient and effective access to their VA health care information. With the newest enhancements to the VA Blue Button, Veteran patients now have more timely access to data, more options for self-reported information and improved data refresh options to keep their personal health records up-to-date and complete – allowing them to become active partners in their health care and well-being.
These updates followed a January 2013 installment that provided Veterans access to additional portions of their VA electronic health information, including the results of VA laboratory tests and VA pathology reports. Veterans were also able to use the VA Blue Button to see the results of VA chemistry, hematology and microbiology tests, as well as the results of VA surgical and pathology tests.
The VA Blue Button enables VA to meet its mission of honoring America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. Facilities can also utilize these updates to continue to provide outstanding care for their patients. As a result of the new updates, sharing Veteran patients' lab results and reports via the VA Blue Button can help facilities securely disclose many VA test results and findings, including VA laboratory results, radiology reports, VA Notes, and Problem Lists, to patients within new three-days after they have been finalized. At this time, VA Pathology Reports (Surgical Pathology, Cytology and Electron Microscopy study results) are available 14 calendar days after they are completed.
In addition to providing Veteran patients with more timely access to data, the enhancements also allow for more options for self-reported information and improved data refresh options to keep their personal health records up-to-date and complete. The enhancements also improve VA's ability to reassign and respond to Secure Messages and resolve issues related to authentication for Veteran patients.
As the Nation's largest health network, VA is constantly looking for ways to serve Veterans in the best, most efficient way possible. As the VA Blue Button enhancements become available across the country, it is VA's hope that Veterans, their families and Caregivers and VA staff are able to enjoy a more efficient and effective health care experience.
