West Palm Beach, Fla. – West Palm Beach VA Medical Center clinical pharmacist, Sandra L. DiScala, Pharm.D, BCPS, was awarded Preceptor of the Year by the Florida Society of Health-System Pharmacists (FSHP). She received the distinguished state recognition for her work in the mentoring and education of pharmacy residents in the VA Medical Center’s Pain Management and Palliative Care postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency program. “While completing rotations with [Dr. DiScala] in the Hospice Unit, I have experienced her extensive knowledge related to not only pharmacotherapy and pharmacokinetics, but her fierce compassion for patients at the end of life,” said West Palm Beach VA Medical Center PGY-2 Resident Michelle Krichbaum, PharmD in her nomination of DiScala for the FSHP Award. “I have yet to meet a pharmacist who exhibits as much passion in making their resident successful as she has done for me through these past ten months.”
“Dr. DiScala has worked meticulously to make the Post Graduate Year 2 pharmacy residency in Pain and Palliative Care an exceptional program,” added Hiroko Forbes, Pharm.D., West Palm Beach VA Medical Center clinical pharmacy supervisor. “She is a diligent collaborator who works with an interdisciplinary team to provide innovative and specialized clinical training to each pharmacy resident. We are extremely proud that Dr. DiScala was recognized by FSHP for her expertise in pain management and her effort to foster a productive learning environment for our residents.”
The FSHP is the professional association of pharmacy practitioners that promotes and supports the continual improvement of pharmaceutical care and the profession of pharmacy as an essential component for the delivery of health care. One component of FSHP's mission is to foster an adequate supply of well-trained, competent pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and associated supportive personnel.
The organization annually conducts an awards program recognizing outstanding current FSHP members who have made significant contributions to the practice of pharmacy in Florida. The nominee for Preceptor of the Year must be an FSHP member with at least three years of experience as a preceptor of Pharmacy residents; possess the qualities of leadership, service and involvement, empathy for patients, self-improvement, and excellence in professional practice.
The nominees are also judged on their ability to create a positive learning environment that fosters interaction between the resident and other health care professionals, and be an accessible facilitator in helping residents achieve their residency competencies and career objectives.
