West Palm Beach Employees participate in South Florida Honor Flight
West Palm Beach VAMC once again participated in sending World War II Veterans on "one more flight with honor" by hosting breakfast on Saturday morning prior to the Honor Flight departure.
West Palm Beach VA Medical Center once again participated in sending World War II Veterans on "one more flight with honor" by hosting breakfast on Saturday morning, September 18th. The VA Employees Association organized the breakfast with donations for the food provided by VITAS Hospice in Martin County. Veteran Canteen Service was gracious in supplying coffee and paper products for the event.
Many WPB VAMC staff showed their support for the program by volunteering for this early morning event. There were many more employees who worked behind the scenes to help get ready for it. Ms. Szabo, the Medical Center Director, was on hand to greet the Veterans and their guardians and provide some welcoming remarks to the group.
There were 134 passengers aboard the September 18th flight; 67 WWII Veterans and 67 Guardians and volunteers (of which 6 were medical officers). The look on the faces of these Veterans and the excitement in their voices about their trip touched all employees there that morning.
The Honor Flight program is a national non-profit organization established to fly America's Veterans at no cost to Washington DC to visit the national memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. The program gives priority to WWII veterans and terminally ill Veterans from other eras. Started in 2005 by a VA employee in Ohio, the program began flying WWII Veterans to see their memorial using 4-passenger planes and volunteer pilots. With public financial support, Honor Flight has transported more than 40,000 Veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam to see their memorials. Southeast Florida Honor Flight (SEFLHF) is based in Martin County and was formed in 2008. This is SEFLHF 4th successful flight to Washington DC, transporting 178 WWII Veterans to see their memorial at absolutely no expense to the Veteran.
