West Palm Beach VA Medical Center
Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work Day
On Thursday, April 25, 2013, the West Palm Beach VA Medical Center had its second annual Take Our Daughters And Sons To Work event. Seventy-eight students from the ages of 5 years to 18 years participated this year! The students engaged in many Medical Center Service tours and workshops. All tours and workshops were specific to the students' ages and interests.
Tours included: Environmental Management, Facilities Management, Prosthetics, Pathology and Laboratory, Human Resources, Police, Dental, Food & Nutrition, Pharmacy and the Fisher House.
Workshops included: Internet safety, protecting privacy and identity and cyber bullying awareness, proper hand washing methods to promote infection control awareness, and safety to control noise and air pollution.
Additionally, the Medical Center's Education Center and Vocational Rehabilitation Services conducted a special workshop for students 14 - 18 years old consisting of resume writing, interviewing techniques and networking skills. The goal was to prepare students for the workforce. Many students attended a Laughing Yoga class and a Salsa Dancing workshop. Some students drew pictures of "What I want to be when I grow up" while others wrote letters or post cards to Veterans who are deployed.
The event was an overwhelming success this year and students learned there is more to working in a medical facility than meets the eye!
